Finish carpentry is the work you look at every day without noticing, until it is done badly. Tight miters, consistent reveals and scribed joints are what separate a room that feels built from one that feels assembled.
Trim is where a renovation is judged. Nobody inspects the framing behind your walls, but everybody sees the corner where two pieces of crown meet, and a gap there is visible from across the room forever. It is also the work most often rushed, because it comes last, when the schedule has already slipped and the budget is tight.
Doing it properly is mostly patience and knowing that nothing in a house is square. Walls bow, corners are rarely ninety degrees, and floors in older properties run downhill. A miter cut at exactly forty five degrees will leave a gap in almost every real corner you meet. The fix is coping, scribing and cutting to the room you actually have rather than the room the drawing assumed.
This work pairs naturally with the rest of what we do. A remodel that ends with good trim reads finished. The same crew that hung the doors sets the casing, so the reveals match across the whole house rather than varying room by room depending on who was on site that week.
What we handle
Single-piece or built-up profiles, coped rather than mitered on inside corners so the joint stays closed when the house moves through the seasons.
Raised panel, flat panel, board and batten and beadboard. Laid out so the panel widths work with the room instead of leaving an awkward offcut in the corner.
Bookcases, window seats, mudroom benches and alcove units built to fit the opening they live in, scribed to walls that are not straight.
Door and window casing, baseboard, chair rail and picture rail, plus hanging and adjusting doors so they close properly and the reveals stay even.
How it runs
In an older house there is usually original profile somewhere worth matching. Introducing a modern profile next to it announces itself immediately.
Paint grade or stain grade, softwood or hardwood, stock profile or custom milled. The decision is partly aesthetic and partly budget, and we lay out both.
Panel spacing, rail heights and how runs meet at corners and openings, worked out first. This is where a good job is actually decided.
Coped inside corners, glued and pinned outside corners, fastener holes filled, joints sanded. Caulk is used where caulk belongs and not as a substitute for a proper cut.
Why us
A coped inside corner stays closed when the house expands and contracts. A mitered one opens up over the first winter and then it is visible forever.
Older houses have profiles worth keeping. New trim that ignores the original reads as a repair rather than a renovation.
Panel and rail spacing is worked out for the actual room. It is the difference between panelling that looks designed and panelling that looks like it ran out.

Questions
Paint grade is usually a softwood or a composite, chosen because it will be covered. It is cheaper and perfectly good when painted. Stain grade is a hardwood selected for consistent grain and colour because the wood itself will be visible. Stain grade costs considerably more and is far less forgiving to install, since filler and caulk cannot hide anything.
Usually. Many original profiles can be matched from stock, and where they cannot, a knife can be ground to run a custom profile to match. That costs more and needs a minimum run to be worth doing, so it makes sense for a whole floor and rarely for one doorway.
A single room of baseboard and casing is usually a day or two. Wainscoting or built-ins take longer because the layout work and the scribing are where the time goes, not the cutting. A full house of trim runs one to two weeks depending on the profiles.
We fill, sand and prepare it, and we can finish it too. Some homeowners prefer to paint themselves once we are done, which is straightforward if the preparation has been done properly. We will tell you what is involved either way.
It fits, which freestanding furniture in an old house rarely does, and it uses awkward space like alcoves and under-stair voids that nothing off the shelf will suit. It costs more than a bookcase and it adds value in a way a bookcase does not, because it stays with the house.
